The Rope That Hung Monkey Will Hang Baboon
by Nyenpan Tarpeh-Doe
This is no laughing matter; Liberia is
faced with some serious embarrassments. President Charles Taylor has been
indicted with war crimes and there is a warrant out for his arrest.
Let's put this in perspective. Didn't
Taylor know that his crimes against humanity would have caught up with him?
Was Charles ignorant then and is he ignorant now? Did Liberians know they
were "electing" a war criminal yet they wanted him to serve because they
desired peace? Did Liberians know that this man has a history of criminal
activities yet wanted him to lead? What didn't the Liberian people know of
this man - Charles Taylor?
There is raging warfare, widely spread
throughout the length and breath of the country with determination to remove
Charles Taylor from power by any means. This is dangerous, very dangerous
for the people of Liberia who have been caught in the cross fire.
During peace talks in Ghana, Taylor
had promised to leave Liberia once the peace keeping forces were deployed.
Member states of ECOWAS had promised to commit forces but took their time to
allow Taylor to make all necessary arrangements to leave the country.
Nigeria played the lead politics in
giving Taylor more time in Liberia especially when the United States had
asked him to leave. Nigeria's procrastination led to the breaking of the
ceased fire agreement signed in Ghana causing the death of scores of
Liberians.
Now, Taylor is singing another song to
the tune that he will not leave Liberia; because to leave now will be to
give in to the rebels and their cause. Taylor had planned all along not to
leave Liberia but rather seek the protection of the peace keepers and to
remain in power while he continues to negotiate peace and disarmament.
Taylor has no immediate plans of leaving Liberia. He is also afraid that he
would be arrested wherever he goes and sent to Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Charles Taylor is in serious trouble. One wonders how Taylor can now escape
this one. However, some still ponder his escape from the Plymouth
Correctional Facilities in Massachusetts.
