Harboring Terrorists in West Africa

Dear Editor,

The article, “Report Says Africans Harbored Al Qaeda” of December 29, 2002 stands in sharp contrast to the Liberian Government’s paid advertisement, which appeared in the November 12, 2002 edition of the Washington Post. Interestingly, the report also implicates Liberia’s Charles Taylor and his military backers, Campaore of Burkina Faso and Khadhafi of Libya in the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

Now, there is a strong basis for a US/UN sponsored probe of the charges to ascertain the extent of Mr. Taylor’s complicity and support for Al Qaeda.

The Liberian Democracy Initiative (LDI) denounces in the harshest terms Mr. Taylor’s support for terrorists, fugitives, and associates of the masterminds of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the people of the United States.

LDI hopes this report and similar reporting would move the US Government and the International Community to take the strongest steps possible to end the threat posed by Taylor’s rule in the West African sub-region. The United States must take the lead in this bold effort to end the criminal syndicate headed by Taylor, Khaddhafi, and Campaore.

Regime change should not be ruled out for these leaders and their governments. In fact, the UN and The United States must take steps—beginning with Liberia’s Taylor, to force this criminal syndicate to face the UN War Crimes Tribunal for Sierra Leone and later in Guatanomo Bay to answer charges for their support for Al Qaeda.
